Beijing Botanical Garden 北京植物园 is a botanical garden situated in the northwestern outskirts of Beijing, China between Xiangshan (Fragrant Hills) Park and Jade Spring Mountain (玉泉山) in the Western Hills.
The gardens cultivate 6,000 species of plant, including 2,000 kinds of trees and bushes, 1,620 varieties of tropical and subtropical plants, 500 species of flowers and 1,900 kinds of fruit trees, water plants, traditional Chinese.
The hothouse exhibition is the highlight of the gardens.
The first room is filled with evergreens and members of the palm family.
The second room is given over to tropical aquatic plants, including water lilies and flowering taros.
The third room displays commercial plants and their breeding and propagation. Here there are specimens of the triple-leaved rubber plant, cocoa and coffee trees and the sugar producing sweet-leaved chrysanthemum which has been introduced into China from abroad.
There are rooms for demonstrating medicinal plants, aromatic plants and succulents. The exhibition of ornamental plants is spectacular with its countless varieties if flowers and grasses. There are over 300 different varieties of orchid, among them a rootless one that relies on fine hairs to absorb water vapor and nutrients from the air.
Besides the hothouse, there is also a national plant specimen hall with a floor space of 11,000 square meters. Specimen houses, plant classification laboratories, research rooms and a lecture hall are arranged around a courtyard linked by arches and trellises.
The Peony Garden was open to the public in 1981. It covers an area of 100,000 square meters and is divided into three sections. The Peony Grove is the most important, covering an area of 35,000 square meters.
The plant collection includes many rare species. There is, for example, the metasequoia first discovered in the region of Hubei and Sichuan by a Chinese scientist in the 1940s. Since it was originally believed that it had become extinct during the Paleogene Period (66 million years ago), the discovery of living specimens in China came as a tremendous surprise to botanists.
Other plants in the gardens include Nepenthes pitcher plants, which are carnivorous plants; the golden butterfly orchid with its lustrous yellow flowers; the American redwood; the Japanese blossoming cherry, and the famous “bodi tree”, the tree under which Buddha sat when he gained enlightenment.
It’s summer holiday. My friend suggest us to join tour to Long Qing Xia 龙庆峡. Long Qing Xia 龙庆峡 is located in north west of Beijing-Yanqing county, just north of the Great Wall at Badaling and 80 kilometers (50 miles) from downtown Beijing. We join a tour group.
It took about 2 hours by bus to go to there and we can see Badaling Greatwall on the way there.
Long Qing Xia 龙庆峡, often called Long Qing Xia Gorge. The gorge, reputed to be the “Little Three Gorges”, features clear water, wooded mountains, and wonderful karst caves. The gorge’s main attractions are the Longqing Gorge Cruise, Baihua (hundred Flowers) Cave, and the Shenxianyuan (Immortal) and Jingang temples. Near the entrance, a grand waterfall plummets down 50 meters (164 feet) from the dam above. A long, dragon-shaped escalator carries visitors to the dam, where the cruise begins. On both sides, eerie mountains and strange formations inspire visitors’ imaginations as they have for centuries. You can marvel at the huge, natural Buddha stone and a hill rising from the water like a great bell. Another hill, named Fengguan (Phoenix Coronet) Isle, is considered the symbol of the gorge. Fengguan is surrounded on three sides by water and closed off by high mountains on the fourth. (credit)
Then we write the cruise, Long Qing Gorge Cruise. Along the cruise, we can see the mountain, and some attraction such as Buggee Jumping.
Then we will ride Cable Car.
And walk around.
We are walk in the peak, so we can see the view from uphill. After walk along the path, we go back to the entrance.
This place is beautiful, too bad when I go there it’s cloudy and no blue sky. When you visit this place on summer, it’s not feel hot at all, it’s cool because many garden in there. And this place is not far from Beijing so very suitable for one day trip.
The study semester is over and some of us will go back for good. So we decided to have a farewell dinner at Golden Jaguar 金钱豹 Buffet in The Place 世贸天街 Mall. It’s a all you can eat restaurant, with price 180 Yuan/person.
Defining itself as an “international cuisine collection,” Golden Jaguar is a paradise for buffet lovers – a mecca to gluttony – lose yourself in the enormous selection of dishes from both the Western and Chinese cookery traditions displayed in a seemingly endless succession of cooking stations armed by a veritable army of a waitstaff. The concept may seem dubious, but Golden Jaguar stands out for the sheer variety of dishes and cuisines is reason enough to indulge on everything from sushi, steak, oysters, salads, swallow’s nest soup, abalone, dim sum, steaks, Southeast Asian food, Italian pastas, French cuisine, sushi, sashimi, all-you-can ice cream and more. Xiao Long Bao小笼包 , is the famous food in this restaurant (Wikipedia). It is a type of Chinese steamed bun (baozi) from Jiangsu province, especially associated with Wuxi and Shanghai (Shanghai was formerly a part of Jiangsu province). In Shanghainese, they are known as siaulon moedeu or xiaolong-style mantous as Wu Chinese-speaking peoples use the traditional definition of “mantou“, which refers to both filled and unfilled buns. It is traditionally prepared in xiaolong, which is a kind of small bamboo steaming basket, which give them their name. Xiaolongbao is often referred to as a kind of “dumpling“, but should not be confused with British or American-style dumplings, nor with Chinese jiaozi.
They are also called a soup dumpling in English-speaking countries because they are filled with hot soup (and therefore must be eaten carefully).
